Translated captions in Google Meet: how to enable

Published September 14, 2026 · 4 min read

You join a Google Meet call in another language, turn captions on expecting to read your own language... and you keep seeing the same foreign language, just written down. The most common question from Meet users: how do I get captions translated into my language? The short answer: you can, but it depends on your plan - and there's a workaround that works on any account.

What Google Meet offers

Meet has two different features, and they're easy to confuse:

  • Captions (transcription): show what's being said in the same language spoken. Free.
  • Translated captions: show what was said in another language. Here's the catch: translation usually requires a paid Google Workspace plan (Business Standard or above). On free accounts you generally only get the transcript in the original language.

How to enable (when available)

  • In the call controls, click Captions (the "CC" icon).
  • Open the caption options and, if the feature is unlocked, choose the meeting language and the translation language.
  • If you don't see the translation option, your account/plan likely doesn't include it.

The limits of native captions

Even when it works, Meet's translation has three problems:

  • Depends on the plan - if company IT hasn't enabled it, you're stuck, and you can't always ask.
  • Only inside Meet - no help with a YouTube video, an external webinar or a recording.
  • Disappears when the meeting ends - you don't keep a clean text to review.

The alternative that works on any account

Instead of relying on each platform's captions, you can translate the audio coming out of your computer. A program captures that sound, transcribes and translates it live - and because it works at the system-audio level, it works the same on free Meet, Teams, Zoom or a YouTube video. You see the original and the translation side by side, and at the end you can export the text.

Lumespeak does exactly that: you open the Meet call, hit start, and it shows the original speech and the translation live - without depending on your Workspace plan and without joining the call as a participant. Free to start, no card.

In short: translated captions in Google Meet exist, but they sit behind a paid plan and stay locked to the platform. Translating the system audio is the universal way out - one tool that works on any account and in any meeting or video.
