Lumespeak vs. native captions in Teams, Meet & Zoom
Updated September 14, 2026 · 5 min read
The native captions in Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Zoom help - but they have limits that show up exactly when you need them most: translation usually requires a paid plan, only works inside that platform, and disappears when the meeting ends. Below is an honest comparison with Lumespeak.
| Feature | Native captions (Teams / Meet / Zoom) | Lumespeak |
|---|---|---|
| Live translation (e.g. English → your language) | Usually only on a paid plan / specific license | Yes, included |
| Works on any platform | No - locked to each app | Yes - any sound on the PC (Teams, Meet, Zoom, YouTube…) |
| Depends on company IT/license | Often yes | No |
| A "bot" joins the call | No (it's native) | No (captures your audio) |
| Original + translation side by side | Usually just the caption | Yes |
| History / export the text | Disappears at the end | Export (.txt / .srt) |
| Languages | Varies by plan | 18 languages |
| Price to start | Included in the platform's plan | Free to start (no card) |
When native captions are enough
If your company already pays for the plan that includes translation, you only use that one platform, and you don't need to keep the text - native captions do the job. That's the simplest case.
When Lumespeak makes the difference
- You don't have the paid plan that unlocks translation (or IT hasn't enabled it).
- You switch between several platforms - and also watch videos/classes in another language.
- You want the original + translation on screen and an exportable text at the end.
- You need something that doesn't join the call as a participant.
The underlying difference
Native captions live inside each platform. Lumespeak works at the system-audio level - so it works the same anywhere sound plays, without depending on a plan or license. It's the same tool for today's meeting and tomorrow's video.
